El clima y el espacio geográfico: su rol en la dinámica del virus dengue en Cuba

Resumen

Introducción: El dengue constituye una de las principales amenazas sanitarias en Cuba, donde la variabilidad climática y el espacio geográfico condicionan la ecología del vector Aedes aegypti y la circulación del virus dengue, incrementando la exposición humana y el riesgo epidémico.

Objetivo: Determinar el efecto de la variabilidad climática sobre la dinámica espacio-temporal del virus dengue en Cuba y proponer acciones de adaptación frente al clima cambiante.

Métodos: Se realizó un estudio correlacional descriptivo mediante un enfoque híbrido que integra la bioclimatología médica y la geografía de la salud. Se analizaron series climáticas, entomológicas y microbiológicas correspondientes al periodo 1991-2024. Se aplicaron análisis de autocorrelación multivariado (Moran global y LISA), análisis de clúster y el índice de Bultó para evaluar la sensibilidad climática de la circulación viral.

Resultados: Se evidenció una marcada estacionalidad de la circulación del virus dengue, con máximos entre septiembre y noviembre, así como ciclos de muy alta actividad viral con periodicidad aproximada de 2 años a 2,5 años. Se identificó un desfase temporal cercano a 1 mes entre anomalías climáticas y picos de circulación viral, con fuerte asociación espacial (Moran bivariado igual a 0,8-0,9). Se detectaron áreas calientes persistentes donde confluyen condiciones climáticas favorables, alta densidad poblacional, urbanización desordenada y pérdida de biodiversidad, amplificando la vulnerabilidad territorial.

Conclusiones: La circulación del virus dengue en Cuba presenta patrones espaciales y estacionales bien definidos, modulada por la variabilidad climática. El enfoque híbrido empleado aporta información estratégica para fortalecer la vigilancia virológica y el desarrollo de sistemas de alerta temprana frente al clima cambiante.
