Acute appendicitis: anesthetic management of a positive COVID-19 patient

Abstract

Covid 19 infection became a pandemic on 2020, with systemic manifestations resulting from a hyperinmune response, gastrointestinal clinical frame sometimes mimicking acute abdomen.  Acute appendicitis is the most frequent abdomen condition in children and adults. Anesthetic management during COVID-19 was a challenge for the anesthesiologist. It was a 13-years-old male asthmatic patient; he arrived at the operating room with suspected diagnosis of acute appendicitis. The patient was premedicated with atropine, steroids and opioids. They were administered 100% oxygen, propofol and succinylcholine for rapid sequence induction. Safety airway was achieved and patient attached to Mindray anesthesia machine to support ventilation during the procedure. Balance anesthesia was administered for maintenance. Non-surgical or anesthetic complications were presented. Recovery was successful and the patient was then transferred to surgical ward.
