Logistical challenges in agri-food trade between Cuba and Russia: a comprehensive analysis
Keywords:
agri-food trade, logistics, Cuba, RussiaAbstract
Introduction: The increase in agri-food trade with Russia is a priority for the Cuban government. However, the conditions of technology and logistics infrastructure in Cuba are significant limitations to the development of the established trade agreements.
Objective: To analyze the factors influencing agro-food trade between Cuba and Russia, with an emphasis on logistical factors.
Methods: Statistical methods were employed for the historical-logical analysis of past trade exchange. The logistical dimension was integrated into the PESTEL method (PESTEL+L) for analyzing the factors affecting trade exchange behavior. The logistical conditions in Cuba were evaluated according to the 2023 Logistics Performance Index.
Results: The economic, technological, and logistical dimensions are the most affected. Economically, measures such as the restructuring of Cuba's debt with the Russian side improve cooperation possibilities, but obsolete technology, lack of cold storage infrastructure and long delivery times for international shipments hinder the viability of large-scale agri-food trade.
Conclusions: The existing logistical conditions do not allow neither profitable activity nor sustained growth of Cuban-Russian agri-food trade. Investment in transportation and storage infrastructure, tracking technology and optimization of international shipments are issues that require greater attention in future bilateral agreements arising within the framework of cooperation between both nations.
