Introduction: COVID-19 is a priority health problem in Cuba and worldwide. It was declared pandemic on January the 20th 2020 due to its high diffusibility and transmissibility.
Objective: To show the main results that contribute to COVID-19 control in Santiago de Cuba from the interdisciplinary-multisectoral perspective and the science-society link.
Methods: They were used different mathematical, statistical, epidemiological, social, psychological and spatial georeferencing tools.
Results: They had a timely influence on governmental-political-health measures. COVID-19 was adequately described, spatial and temporally characterized and predicted. They were identified patterns of demographic, clinical-epidemiological behaviors, and spatial autocorrelation of COVID-19; they were characterized the cases with asymptomatic forms; they were defined five transmission clusters in three municipalities of the province, and they were described the organization of hospital services and the influence of international travelers in the non-homogeneous distribution of the number of cases in Cuba. The sexual and reproductive health indicators were not affected by COVID-19. The number of cases was significantly correlated with population density and degree of urbanization. Contacts of confirmed cases and health workers had a low perception of risk. The epidemiological clinical history and hospital discharge sheet were adapted for COVID-19, which led to the training of epidemiologists and family physicians.
Conclusions: The interdisciplinary-multisectoral vision and the science-society link is the essential and necessary approach for the confrontation, characterization and control of COVID-19, and the timely and rapid adoption of governmental, political and sanitary measures by each of responsible actors (Provincial and Municipal Defense Councils and health authorities).
