Abstract

Introduction: Injury prediction based on psychological factors provides robust evidence for the biopsychosocial prevention of this scourge. However, in Cuba, there is a notable lack of findings in this line of research.

Objective: To determine the psychological variables that best predict injury history in a sample of Cuban team sports athletes.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 250 athletes from the Villa Clara baseball, basketball, soccer, and first-class softball teams. The total number of female softball players in this category in Cuba was also included. Data collection included document reviews, and the Competitive Sport Anxiety Inventory and the Psychological Inventory of Sports Performance were applied. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's linear correlation coefficient, and mixed successive stepwise multiple linear regression were used.

Results: Except for attitude control, the psychological variables established significant relationships with injury history. However, competitive anxiety, negative coping control, motivational level, attention control, and visual and imaginative control were more significant than the others. The regression models always showed negative coping control as a significant predictor; however, the interaction of this variable with competitive anxiety and visual and imaginative control significantly increased its predictive capacity.

Conclusions: The presence of previous injuries was predicted in 33% of cases when low negative coping control interacted with high levels of competitive anxiety and low scores on visual and imaginative control and motivation.
