LA REAL ACADEMIA DE CIENCIAS DE LA HABANA: PROPÓSITOS Y FUNCIONES
Abstract
La persistente promoción por el destacado cirujano habanero Nicolás JoséGutiérrez (1800-1890), durante treinta y cinco años, de su proyecto para crear
una academia de ciencias, junto a una serie de circunstancias favorables,
condujo, por fin, a la inauguración de la Real Academia de Ciencias Médicas,
Físicas y Naturales de La Habana el 19 de mayo de 1861.(1) El propósito
general invocado para tan perseverante gestión bien puede haber coincidido
con aquello que Gutiérrez manifestó años después de la fundación: “Siquiera
no fuese más por orgullo nacional, debiera hacérsele entender a los forasteros
y extranjeros [sic] principalmente, que no nos ocupamos solo en hacer azúcar y
cosechar tabaco, sino que cultivamos también las ciencias.”
