Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the most common imperfections and degradation found in prints. This was achieved through an analysis of the materials used and through a study of the processes and techniques involved in printmaking. The authors, directors and restorers at the restoration workshop, having evaluated and restored hundreds of prints that belong to museums and private collections, suggest several preventive measures for their appropriate conservation and restoration. They highlight the use of polyester and Reemay® sleeves for storing the prints and for allowing non-manipulative consultation. They also warn against the digitalization of collections as the sole measure for preventive conservation.
