Abstract

Introduction: The Cuban society shows its strengths to address the complex challenges of development in the third decade of the 21st century, accentuated by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the reinforcement of the blockade by the government of the United States of America. In this context, the Cuban Academy of Sciences (ACC in Spanish) is seen as an important actor based on the leading scientific contribution of the academics and the exercise of their advisory functions. The present contribution aims to unveil the role of the ACC in addressing the nation's sustainable development challenges.
Methods: The starting point was a socio-historical, epistemic, and management study of documents on sciences and public policies, in order to identify relevant theoretical bases for development policies and actions in Cuba. The multidimensional systemic approach and successive triangulation were used, as well as a careful observation of the principle of method immanence in the content.
Results: From this perspective, a reflection is put forth on the role of ACC as a consultant and advisor for the Cuban State. The article expounds elements of the projection and advances of the ACC in the organizational innovation process and its response to the challenges and demands related to the role to be played by science and scientists on the path to the development of the country. Emphasis is placed on the approach to sustainability within the framework of the articulation of the SDGs with the guidelines of strategic development of Cuba.
