Comprehensive care protocol for patients with maloclusions and functional postural alterations

Introduction: The relationship between incorrect body posture and the presence of malocclusions leads to a new diagnostic and treatment approach at an early age, with an interdisciplinary focus and that favors normal craniofacial and body growth and development.
Objective: To develop a comprehensive care protocol for patients with malocclusions and functional postural alterations applicable in the specialty of Orthodontics.
Methods: Innovation research with a mixed approach at the Faculty of Stomatology of Villa Clara and the Celia Sánchez Teaching Stomatology Clinic from September 2017 to January 2023, which consisted of a quantitative study to determine relationships between occlusal and postural variables, qualitative studies to design and evaluate by specialists a comprehensive care protocol, as well as its validation by expert criteria and a study of the effectiveness of the protocol through its application in clinical practice by means of a quasi-experiment with a study and control group.
Results: Altered occlusal and postural characteristics prevailed in growth models II and III and in adolescents. A care protocol was designed that was relevant, useful, innovative and feasible when evaluated by specialists. In the internal validation, the experts issued criteria that showed their validity, reliability and robustness. External validation demonstrated the effectiveness of the protocol by showing the superiority of comprehensive care over conventional care.
Conclusions: The designed protocol allowed for procedures to be carried out in a sequential and structured manner, as well as homogenizing care with a comprehensive approach.
