Psychological care service for convalescent children and adolescents from COVID-19 in Villa Clara

Introduction: Children and adolescents are a vulnerable population to the psychological impact of COVID-19. Its harmful effects have a hidden impact on the social and psychological life of the population in question, which can be seen with greater emphasis during convalescence. The objective of the study was to implement a psychological care service for children and adolescents convalescing from COVID-19 in Villa Clara.
Methods: A research was carried out with a qualitative constructive-interpretive approach between April 2020 and December 2021. The techniques used to obtain the information were the affective rhombus, thematic composition, the semi-structured interview, the psychiatric examination, the FF-SIL family functioning test and the psychiatric social history. The sample consisted of 229 children and adolescents, based on criteria of convenience and availability, and with prior informed consent of their parents. It was used the ATLAS.ti 9 tool to process the data obtained, software that allowed the analysis of frequencies and co-occurrences of codes.
Results: Among other aspects, clinical-psychological alterations affecting all psychological functions are noted; as well as health preservation needs in the personal and family spheres. Conclusions: They were evident more frequently clinical psychological symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, insomnia, hyperkinesis, sadness and fear, and psychiatric pathologies such as adjustment and anxiety disorders; the multidisciplinary team addressed several issues to solve the main needs identified within the study, with emphasis on emotional, instrumental and informational social support, implementing psychological counseling and psychotherapeutic intervention actions involving the children and their families.
