Introduction: The clinical method is the supreme professional competence in the healthcare field and every doctor must master it to the highest professional level.
Objective: To contribute to the improvement of the professional work method for the care of sick individuals: the clinical method, as well as its teaching-learning process.
Methods: It was performed a synthesis of the results of the research carried out between 2000 and 2020, when they were used several theoretical methods (mainly modeling) and empirical methods (interviews and surveys of students, general practitioners, specialists and teachers).
Results: From the conception of medical assistance as a decision-making process, the most relevant contribution to the improvement of the clinical method has been the development of a new model of the professional method: the diagnostic-therapeutic clinical method. They are recognized several contributions to the field of medical teaching, among which the following stand out: a) proposal of a new category to be incorporated into the model of the professional in the Medicine career: the learning object; b) identification and justification of medical decision making as an essential skill in the Medicine career, and its teaching-learning through the diagnostic- therapeutic clinical method; c) elaboration of a model for the teaching and learning of the medical interview; d) improvement of the teaching-learning of diagnostic reasoning; e) identification of limitations of the clinic for medical diagnosis; f) details about the role of complementary tests in the clinical method; g) elaboration of a model of the visit pass as an teaching assistance activity. As a culmination of all these ideas, it was proceeded the conception, design and application, for almost 20 years, of a didactic intervention for teaching and learning of the theoretical foundations of the clinical method.
Conclusions: The opinions obtained from the subjects involved allow us to affirm that the theoretical enrichment of the clinical method, and its teaching-learning, contribute to the improvement of the curriculum in the Medicine career.Downloads
