Abstract

Introduction: The research started documenting: how did the process of assimilation of the precepts of the international Modern Movement materialize in the architecture and urban planning of Havana between 1930 and 1960, and how did its adaptation to local circumstances transform its residential landscape?

Objective: To characterize the physical-social context that conditioned the progress and consolidation of the Modern Architecture Movement in Havana, the scope of its changes and urban transformations and to analyze its urban-architectural development with emphasis on territories less studied by specialized bibliography.

Methods: They were combined theoretical, empirical, quantitative and qualitative methods in order to systematize the results, based on archival documentary sources and field work.

Results: Cataloging actions, records, mappings, documentary reconstructions, graphic modeling and urban historical studies, with contributions generated from the teaching process and scientific research. The qualitative analysis allowed us to identify continuities, ruptures, influences, feedbacks and exceptionalities in the evolution of Cuban architecture.

Conclusions: The urban-architectural changes and transformations were due to conditions that left a universe built of valuable exponents and attributes. As part of the process, individual and collective contributions created a quality architecture that has transcended time. The results constitute models of work and consultation for students and professionals of architecture, history and culture at different levels, and provide elements for the rehabilitation, conservation and heritage protection of works of the national Modern Movement.
