Contribution to the knowledge of broilers feeding with Royal palm nut meal

Introduction: There is empirical information on Royal palm (Roystonea regia H.B.K. Cook) nuts for animal feeding
Objective: To evaluate physiological, productive, and health indicators besides carcass and meat quality of broilers that consume palm kernel flour as a dietary alternative.
Methods: They were used four experimental treatments: control (corn and soybean) and three inclusion levels of Royal palm nut meal: (5, 10 and 15)%. They were determined the nutritive value of the source in broilers, pancreatic lipase and trypsin enzymatic activities, morphometric indicators and the presence of total and cellulolytic bacteria in the cecum. They were studied the productive performance and the economic benefit of its use, as well as hematological and immunological indicators and blood biochemistry. Carcass and meat quality were evaluated.
Results: The Royal palm nut meal is a good source of fiber and fat, which indicates good energy content and justifies its use for animals feeding. The alimentary process in poultry is activated, in order to digest fats provided by the source. The concentration of cecal microorganisms improved. The possibility of including up to 15% of Royal palm nuts meal in the diet of broilers was demonstrated without modifying the productive response and with economic advantages. In this sense, 55.62 USD are saved for import substitution (corn and soybean) per ton of diet. They were produced lean and healthy carcasses for human consumption.
Conclusions: These results show the biological, productive and economic feasibility of the use of Royal palm nut meal as an alternative food source, locally available for broilers feeding.
