Relationship between comorbidities and COVID-19 morbidity and mortality

Abstract

Introduction: Since Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) appeared in December 2019 to the present day, the relationship between comorbidities and COVID-19 morbidity has been established, because the spread and behavior of this virus has a quick and changing evolution. The objective of this study was to analyze behavior of comorbidities in morbidity and mortality due to COVID-19 in the districts of Lima and El Callao during June 2020.
Methods: A descriptive, quantitative approach was used, while working with 140 virtual medical records of COVID-19 positive patients.
Results: Respiratory diseases such as asthma, obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, arterial hypertension and diabetes were found to be the main comorbidities, in addition to sex and old age. Conclusions: The pandemic affects the population of both sexes who suffer from comorbidities in equal proportions; morbidity is higher in adults under 60, while mortality predominates in adults over 60.
