Abstract

Introduction: In order to strengthen the national innovation system, agricultural innovation requires the reinforcement of related systems. Related to this bases, the objective of the present research was to conceptualize the local agricultural innovation system in its contribution to the local development management, food production, seeds and local well-being.
Methods: Using descriptive-retrospective methods of more than fifteen years of research, in relationship with actors from 45 municipalities of Cuba, was a base to build a local agricultural innovation system (SIAL), identifying the principles that govern it, as well as the methodological and conceptual aspects necessary for its implementation.
Results: Managed and coordinated from governments, SIAL has shown its impact on the communities and governments involved through successive learning cycles in action that strengthen the leadership of municipal governments and enable the challenges of agricultural development to be built comprehensively. As a conclusion SIAL has proven to be an effective tool for decision-making from governments for the implementation of development strategies and the promotion of local food systems. Through the participation of actors, the dialogue of knowledge about innovation and collective prominence, has been contributed to governance in the municipalities involved with socio-economic and productive impacts, through the efficient use of resources, energy and the reduction of CO2 emissions.
