Abstract

Introduction: In the forensic field, the determination of age is vital for the correct identification of deceased and human remains.

Objectives: To design a computer algorithm that allows estimating the age of deaths from atherosclerotic lesions in the aorta and coronary arteries.

Methods: It was carried out an observational, analytical, developmental and cross-sectional study on 204 deceased registered between 2017 and 2021 at the Institute of Legal Medicine. Variables from the Atherometric System and regression equations were used to estimate age from the atherosclerotic lesion in the aorta and coronary arteries. It was created a computer algorithm to facilitate this purpose.

Results: Atherosclerotic lesions were observed in the four selected arteries of all age groups, with a positive correlation between age and type of lesion. 15 regression equations were obtained for age estimation with an error range between (10.11 and 11.80) years. It was created a computer algorithm to facilitate the determination of age from atherosclerotic lesions.

Conclusions: The algorithm created allows us to estimate age, in the forensic identification process, from the atherosclerotic lesion in the aorta and coronary arteries.
