Abstract

In December 2019, several cases of pneumonia of etiology back then not determined, occurred in Wuhan, Hubei Province of China. A new coronavirus (2019-nCov) was determined as a causal agent, which was later named SARS-CoV-2. Olfactory disturbances that precede or accompany SARS-CoV-2 infection may even be the only clinical manifestation of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). A review of the presented casuistry and research articles related to the involvement of the olfactory pathway by COVID-19 and the possible pathophysiological mechanisms involved was performed.
