Cuba and its a priori holistic vision to face ageism in the context of COVID-19

Introduction. Ageism as a phenomenon associated with aging has had a particular incidence during the coronavirus pandemic. Objective: The aim is to discuss the conditioned context for the protection of the elderly in Cuba before the spread of the pandemic, in order to demonstrate the effective confrontation with ageism on the Island compared with the European and North American realities.Methods. The theoretical-legal and exegetic-analytical methods were used for doctrinal and legal study. Likewise, the documentary review technique was used, by analyzing both the national and international press to visualize the behavior of ageism in the context of COVID-19. The legal sociological method was also used for the analysis of protective legal norms of old age according to their respective social realities.
Results. The international and Cuban legal frameworks were analyzed to assess the latter's escalation in the field of protection of old age, as well as its translation into public policies. The ageist context in Europe and the US was discussed through information drawn from international media.
